Niricson is the brainchild of co-founder Harsh Rathod who was working toward a Ph.D. in civil engineering at the University of Victoria in 2016 when he learned that a bridge on the busy Mumbai-Goa highway had collapsed, killing nearly 30 people. That disaster changed everything for Harsh, who then focused his doctoral work on using robotics and computer vision to make infrastructure safer. At that time, he hadn’t thought about business applications for his work, which aimed to replace antiquated inspection techniques.
Niricson was founded in 2020 by Harsh Rathod (CEO) and Aki Tomita (CTO). The name Niricson comes from the Sanskrit word ‘nireekshan’ which means “inspection” or “detailed investigation”. Harsh & Aki built Niricson over the next several years, setting up teams for Machine Learning, Mechatronics, and Software Development.

Aki Tomita
Co-Founder and CTO of Niricson, a visionary with over 30 years of experience in the technology industry. Aki is a strategic thinker and creative problem solver, known for bringing innovative products to the market. With a “can do” attitude, they drive projects with precision and time-consciousness. Aki’s fluency in English and Japanese and understanding of both cultures foster successful international partnerships.
Throughout their career, Aki held key positions at renowned companies like Raychem/Tyco Electronics and Silicon Light Machines before co-founding Niricson in 2020. As CTO, Aki leads the development of proprietary damage assessment software and groundbreaking drone-based data collection technology. Notably, they successfully applied this technology to assess dam structures in Canada, demonstrating their commitment to cost-effective asset maintenance.
Aki Tomita continues to drive Niricson’s technological advancements, collaborating with industry leaders Techstars and Arcadis. Under their leadership, Niricson is, making infrastructure safer, revolutionizing asset management, creating a future where innovation and sustainability go hand in hand.
Harsh Rathod, Ph.D.
Co-Founder and CEO of Niricson. With extensive engineering expertise, Harsh’s journey began as an Intern at Larsen & Toubro in 2013. They later became a visiting research scholar at the University of Victoria, where they developed innovative Fibre-Reinforced Geopolymer Concrete Pavers.
Harsh’s passion for concrete construction led them to serve as Vice President of the UVic ACI Student Chapter from 2015 to 2017, promoting educational involvement. As a Research Fellow at IC-IMPACTS Centres of Excellence, Harsh contributed patents, journal articles, and conference papers.
In 2020, Harsh co-founded Niricson, revolutionizing asset management for engineers. With a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Victoria and ongoing enrollment in the Creative Destruction Lab, Harsh drives innovation at Niricson.
